Final Clayton County School Board Hearing on Budget Draws Few Parents

The Clayton County Public School System is home to more than 50,000 students.

The school district collected $374,910,876 in revenue for fiscal year 2014 - 2015. During the same fiscal year, $372,863,405 was spent.

Given the millions of dollars at stake for the thousands of kids in Clayton County schools, one would think the Clayton County School Board assembly hall would be overflowing with parents attempting to get the most money allocated to their child's school.

Unfortunately, at the final public hearing on the fiscal year 2015 - 2016 budget, very few parents showed up to fight for their local schools.

Five speakers signed up to speak during the public comment period on the proposed spending plan. Nearly all of those speakers were teachers urging the school board to restore teacher furlough days, increase teacher pay, and give teachers a bonus.

Clayton County's proposed budget for the next fiscal year includes $390,434,949 in revenues and $410,784,919 in expenditures.

The Clayton County School Board is expected to adopt a final budget at its 26 May 2015 meeting.
