Atlanta Among 24 Cities Invited to Bid for 2016 Republican National Convention

Atlanta is one of 24 cities invited to bid for the 2016 Republican National Convention.

KSHB-TV (Kansas City, MO) reports that 24 cities were sent paperwork in November 2013, informing them of the bidding process. Those cities were:

  • Cincinnati
  • Cleveland
  • Columbus
  • Dallas
  • Denver
  • Detroit
  • Indianapolis
  • Kansas City
  • Las Vegas
  • Philadelphia
  • Phoenix
  • Salt Lake City
  • San Antonio
  • Orlando
  • Seattle
  • Atlanta
  • Chicago
  • Houston
  • Los Angeles
  • Miami
  • New Orleans
  • New York
  • Oklahoma City
  • St. Louis
Atlanta last hosted a political convention in 1988, when the Democratic National Convention was held at the old Omni Coliseum near CNN Center.

There seems to be slight interest among at least one Georgia Republican to bring the RNC to the Peach State in 2016. Former state Senator Seth Harp proposed forming a Republican National Convention Committee to explore the feasibility of bidding to host the next Republican National Convention for the next eligible convention, during his 2013 campaign for Georgia Republican Party Chairman.
