Gainesville Republican Wants to Give Active Duty & Retired Military Free Weapons Carry Licenses

State Representative Emory Dunahoo (R - Gainesville) pre-filed legislation last week to give active duty and retired military members free weapons carry licenses.

House Bill 703 says, "Any person who has served with the United States military shall be entitled to be issued a weapons carry license as provided for in this Code section without the payment of any of the fees provided for in this Code section."

Currently, free weapons carry licenses are only permitted for retired law enforcement officials who have "served as a law enforcement officer for at least ten of the 12 years immediately preceding the retirement."

Representative Dunahoo's bill active or retired military be either: A.) an honorably discharged veteran of the United States military; or B.) currently serving in good standing with the United States military and has so served for at least three years.
