Fulton County to Lease Union City Jail for $111,750 per Month

At its 17 August meeting, the Fulton County Commission approved an intergovernmental agreement with Union City to lease the municipality's jail for $111,750 per month.

The agreement will alleviate the overcrowding at the Fulton County Jail, by providing at least 285 inmate beds.

Under the terms of the agreement, the Fulton County Sheriff’s office will staff the jail. Union City will be responsible for payment of all utilities, maintenance and repairs.

Union City closed its jail in June after officials revealed the cost to run the jail would exceed revenues in 2013.

Fulton County Comissioner Robb Pitts first suggested the county lease the facility from Union City after an inspection of the location with Union City Mayor Pro Tempore Vince Williams and Fulton County Chief Jailer Mark Adger.

"After inspecting the Union City Jail with Mayor Pro Tempore Williams and Chief Adger, we all agreed that the jail is in great condition”, said Pitts. “Given the financial needs of Union City with respect to servicing the debt on the bonds that were issued to finance the jail and our own need for additional beds, I am hopeful that we can work out a mutually acceptable agreement with Union City."

Pitts says he’s pleased that the Fulton County Commission approved the lease of the Union City Jail, as he had previously suggested.
