Thurmond Suggests He May Run Again And Again And Again. . .

Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Michael Thurmond is facing Republican Johnny Isakson in November and so far, Isakson is letting it be known that he intends make use of his large financial advantage over Thurmond.

Isakson, sitting on a campaign war chest of $4.9 million, continues to roll out television spot after television spot; three commercials already. Most political prognosticators say Isakson is a lock for re-election, but that doesn't seem to deter Thurmond. In fact, an article in Thursday's Athens Banner Herald suggests that the out-going Commissioner of Labor may make another run for public office in the future.

. . .Thurmond hinted that even if his opponent prevails in November, this race might not be his last run for elected office.

"Nobody thought I could win," Thurmond said - a claim he's heard again in his campaign for the U.S. Senate.

"If at first you don't succeed, what?" he asked.

"Try, try again," the audience responded Wednesday.

The next U.S. Senate election isn't scheduled until 2014, the same year as Georgia's next statewide elections. Should Barnes or Porter lose their bids to become Governor and Lt. Governor, Thurmond could try for one of those posts.

An individual who's won three statewide elections doesn't go back to the Georgia General Assembly, so that's out.

Maybe, depending on how the new maps are drawn, Thurmond could run for Congress in 2012.

All this talk is premature though, seeing as Michael Thurmond first has to get past the 2010 elections first. Still, it seems odd that Thurmond is talking about his future while he's a candidate for election to the world's greatest deliberative body. It's almost as if Thurmond has resigned himself to defeat in November.

Winning candidates don't talk about their future while they're still running for another office.
