Scandal-Plagued Pastor A Generous Benefactor For GA Democratic Candidates

Late Tuesday night, Fox 5 Atlanta broke news of a sex scandal involving New Birth Missionary Baptist Church Bishop Eddie Long [Russell, Dale (2010-9-21). Sex Allegations Made Against Eddie Long. WAGA-TV. Retrieved on 2010-9-22.].

Two lawsuits filed late Tuesday in DeKalb County accuse Bishop Long of inappropriate sexual relationships with two young men from his church.

Maurice Robinson and Anthony Flagg, both in their early 20's, claim in their lawsuits that, "Long utilized his spiritual authority to coerce certain young male members and employees of defendant New Birth into engaging in sexual acts and relationships."

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported that a third lawsuit, alleging sexual misconduct by Long, was filed in DeKalb Superior Court Wednesday [Matteucci, Megan and Boone, Christian (2010-9-22). Details of these three lawsuits led Democratic gubernatorial candidate Roy Barnes to cancel a Thursday fundraiser with Eddie Long.

Long endorsed Barnes' gubernatorial campaign in July, saying that, "Roy is the only candidate in this race who has consistently been a friend to our community. He is the only one I trust to guide our state in a better direction." [Metro Atlanta faith leaders back Roy Barnes for governor. Chattanooga Times Free Press. Retrieved on 2010-9-22.]

Long gave Barnes a $5,000 campaign contribution, according to disclosures filed with the State Ethics Commission. Long's wife, Vanessa, also gave $6,100 to Barnes last December.

Bishop Eddie Long's generosity isn't limited to just Roy Barnes though.

Records show that, over the years, Eddie Long donated thousands of dollars to several Georgia Democratic candidates.
