Bill Introduced To Prohibit The Sale Of Cell Phones To Minors

I like state Rep. Sheila Jones. State Rep. Sheila Jones is a friend of mine. Both she and her mother always voted for me to be a state Democratic committee member from Fulton County. Friendship aside though, there's a bill Rep. Jones introduced that has me scratching my head.

House Bill 1520 would make it illegal for cell phones to be sold to persons under the age of 18 without the consent of a parent or guardian. In fact, the legislation makes it a misdemeanor under the laws of Georgia.

In the words of Stewie Griffin, "What the deuce?"

I understand sexting has gotten out of control, but is a law banning the sale of cell phones to minors really necessary? Does this state really need this kind of government regulation?

H.B.1520 isn't going anywhere this session. Still, I don't believe the bill should have been introduced in the first place. This bill is one of those junk pieces of legislation that makes a collective sigh emanate from taxpayers as they roll their eyes and grumble, "Our government at work."
