David Ralston Elected Speaker of the Georgia House

Ralston was nominated by the man he defeated for the GOP nomination, House Ways & Means Committee Chair Larry O'Neal (R - Bonaire).

The Democrats selected former House Rules Committee Chairman Calvin Smyre (D - Columbus) as their candidate for House Speaker. House Democratic Leader DuBose Porter (D - Dublin) used his nomination speech to rail against the "hawks" -- legislators who serve as ex-officio members of all committees that can vote up or down bills as instructed by the House Speaker.

Porter said the hawks ended the principle of "one man, one vote" in the Georgia House.

The vote count for Speaker was for 116 Ralston and 58 for Smyre.

There are 74 Democrats in the Georgia House.
