Hank Johnson Named A Regional Whip In 111th Congress

When Congress re-convenes in January to start a new session, 4th district Congressman Hank Johnson will have a new responsibility to tend to; gathering support for legislation when it comes to the floor for a vote.

Rep. Johnson was elected to the position of Regional Whip for the 8th District -- which is comprised of Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, Alabama the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico-- yesterday by the House Democratic Caucus.

House Majority Whip James E. Clyburn (D - South Carolina) welcomed the Georgia Democrat to the House leadership team saying that, "Congressman Johnson has shown outstanding leadership qualities."

"A former criminal defense attorney, judge and local public official, he brought unique skills to Congress and he has gained the respect of his colleagues," Clyburn said. "Very few one term members are selected for this role and since he did not seek it out, his election is testament to the confidence his colleagues place in him. We expect a very busy legislative agenda in the 111th and his assistance will be key to our efforts."

In a statement released by his office, Congressman Johnson said he was humbled and proud that his Democratic colleagues in the U.S. House honored him with the position of Regional Whip.

"It came as a complete surprise," Johnson said. "I’m looking forward to working with Majority Whip Clyburn and the entire Leadership Team as we take on the challenges of moving this nation forward in these tough times."
