I Support Bringing The 2012 Republican National Convention To Atlanta

Yesterday Peach Pundit posted an email sent out by state Insurance Commissioner (and 2010 candidate for Governor) John Oxendine lobbying for Atlanta to host the 2012 Republican National Convention.

As a Georgian, I am very proud that we hosted the Democratic National Convention in 1988, and with that history, combined with the world class facilities of Phillips Arena, the Georgia Dome, and the Georgia World Congress Center, we are well positioned to host the Republican National Convention. I think it’s time we tried to do so.

To that end, in the days and weeks ahead, I will be working with Republican leaders as we move forward in an effort to create a bid committee to host the next Republican National Convention.

As a Democrat, it would be my preference that Atlanta host the 2012 Democratic National Convention. However, any event the positively impacts Georgia and the city of Atlanta is an event that I can get behind.

Having been to two national political conventions, I can tell you from personal experience that Atlanta is a city that could do an exponentially better job at hosting either party's national convention in the near future.

We've got the hotels. We've got plenty of arena space in the Georgia Dome or Philips Arena. We've got plenty of meeting space at the Georgia World Congress Center. There's no reason why Atlanta should not put in a bid for both the Democratic and Republican national conventions. Realistically though, it's more likely that Atlanta host a Republican National Convention, so let's get to work towards bringing the RNC to Atlanta in 2012.
