Jim Martin Opposes Gay Marriage, Then Holds GLBT Fundraiser

Coming just a day after Democrat Jim Martin said he was opposed to same-sex marriages [Source: Augusta Chronicle, "Contributions to campaigns, gay marriage split hopefuls", June 30, 2008], a leading Democratic blog reports that the former DHR Commissioner will hold a fundraiser with the Chapter and National Development Director for the National Stonewall Democrats -- an organization for gay and lesbian Democrats.

Blog for Democracy says that Jim Martin will kick off Atlanta's gay pride week with a "Proud to Support Martin for Senate" event Monday evening where the suggested contribution is $25 [Source: Blog for Democracy, "Senate stuff", June 30, 2008].

Martin's opposition to gay marriage may cause him some troubles in the Democratic primary as word spreads through the GLBT community that a person once described as a "gay ally" by the Southern Voice newspaper just a few months ago so easily came out against an issue considered important in some gay and lesbian circles [Source: Southern Voice, "Gay ally Jim Martin goes after Saxby Chambliss", March 28, 2008].

Two other Democrats running for U.S. Senate, Rand Knight and Josh Lanier, both said they supported same-sex marriages.
